Propane Market Metrics: US hydrocarbon gas liquid imports and exports

Almost all of the hydrocarbon gas liquid imports to the United States today come from Canada. Propane and butanes come by rail from Canada into the Midwest and Northeast regions of the United States. The imports are highly seasonal, with about two-thirds occurring between October and March. The demand cycle is driven by propane use as a heating fuel and by blending butane into gasoline. Meanwhile, U.S. exports of hydrocarbon gas liquids soared to nearly 2.7 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2023. They were at 70,000 bpd in 2007.
